Michael Newton became Iowa State's chief of police on April 3, 2017. As associate vice president for public safety and chief of police, Newton oversees the the police and parking divisions, risk management, and building security services. His responsibilities will include community engagement and outreach; emergency planning and management; threat assessment and response; and Clery Act compliance.

Newton came to Iowa State from the University of Wisconsin police department, where he served from 1998 to 2017, climbing the ranks to captain. His responsibilities included emergency management, patrol, and planning and development. Newton oversaw the field services division of approximately 100 officers and employees.

Newton earned a criminal justice degree from Mount Senario College, Ladysmith, Wisconsin; a master's degree in administration of justice from the University of Louisville, Kentucky; and a Ph.D. in business administration from Northcentral University, Prescott Valley, Arizona.
